March 5, 2020 Tentative Agreement Today, with support from the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Services (FMCS), Shawnee Mission School District (SMSD) and the National Education Association – Shawnee Mission (NEA-SM) has reached a preliminary agreement (until ratification) on a contract for the 2019-2020 school year. After ratification, it is the only treaty for all members of the negotiating unit. This agreement was able to respond by mutual agreement to the concerns of the district and the association. The union, the National Education Association-Shawnee Mission, is questioning the legality of the three-year unilateral contract, as Kansas law stipulates that new contracts will be negotiated annually between teachers and School Districts in Kansas. „I think it`s pretty safe to say that no one wanted a unilateral agreement,“ Sinclair said. „It was the last stop in a very long negotiation process. But now that we are there, and I can talk about it and have this open dialogue, I want to move forward with the teachers.
